Sally Kyd is a Professor of Law and current Head of Leicester Law School. Sally’s research and teaching lie in the fields of Criminal Law and Criminal Justice. Her main specialism is in road traffic offences, having become interested in them through her PhD on vehicular homicide, after which her interest broadened and she published a book entitled Driving Offences: Law, Policy and Practice. Since 2020, she has contributed to Part C (Road Traffic Offences) of Blackstone’s Criminal Practice. She is a founding member of the Roads Policing Academic Network.

In 2011-12, she held an AHRC Early Career Fellowship funding a project to examine how the new causing death by driving offences created by the Road Safety Act 2006 were operating in practice, and in 2018 was funded by the Road Safety Trust to conduct a project with Dr Steven Cammiss which explored the enforcement of endangerment offences such as careless and dangerous driving and identified best practice in roads policing. She has acted as a critical friend on the Law Commission’s project on Automated Vehicles.

She has authored numerous articles and book chapters and has been a contributor to case comments on road traffic cases in the Criminal Law Review. Beyond road traffic offences, she has been involved inter alia, in a Ministry of Justice funded evaluation of the impact of the sentencing guidelines for sexual offences and robbery, and is co-author of a leading undergraduate textbook on Criminal Law.
